Liberty sits at the southern end of this mountainous landscape, anchored by the Liberty National Historic District. This area is defined by the legacy of resource extraction and transit through the high country, evidenced by the Wash Green Sandstone Quarry and the winding route of Old Blewett Pass. The geography is carved by complex drainage systems, including Swauk Creek, Peshastin Creek, and Williams Creek, which create deep valleys such as Billy Goat Gulch and Cougar Gulch.

Small mountain settlements like Mountain Home and seasonal facilities like Swauk Lodge reflect the remote, rugged character of the terrain. Recreation is prominent throughout the watershed, with several established sites including Mineral Springs Campground and Swauk Campground.
