About this map

Ginebra, Suiza served as the setting for the adoption of the Protocolo Facultativo on October 10, 1994. This landmark agreement was designed to strengthen the Convención Sobre La Eliminación De Todas Las Formas De Discriminación Contra La Mujer by providing a formal process for individual grievances. By the time México ratified the protocol in 1999, the Comité Para La Eliminación De La Discriminación Contra La Mujer (CEDAW) was established as the primary body for international oversight. The committee, consisting of 23 global experts, holds the authority to investigate serious or systematic abuses of women's rights. This transition to an enforceable legal framework allowed for greater accountability, ensuring that member states adhere to international human rights standards regarding gender equality.
