About this map

Cheeneetnuk River meanders through the northwest corner of this interior Alaskan wilderness, as documented during the mid-1950s aerial surveys. The landscape is characterized by high, unnamed ridges and deep valleys, where Shoeleather Creek drains a large central basin before cutting north. Mapping by the U.S. Geological Survey at this time relied on photogrammetric methods from 1953 aerial photography, capturing the terrain before any significant human infrastructure or named settlements were established. This sheet shows the Seward Meridian land lines as predetermined but unsurveyed locations, highlighting the raw, undeveloped state of the Alaska territory during this era of post-war exploration and mapping.
