The Mazatzal Mountains and the high desert canyons of the Tonto National Forest dominate this mid-century topographic survey. The southwestern corner is anchored by the Verde River as it enters Bartlett Reservoir, where underwater contours provided by the Salt River Project reveal the submerged topography near the spillway. The landscape is a network of ridges and flats, including Cypress Ridge, Lion Mountain, and Squaw Flat, connected only by primitive transportation routes.
