Little Grassy Mtn rises above a high desert landscape defined by ephemeral water management and the rugged volcanic geography of southeastern Malheur County. This modern 2023 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey shows a network of remote ranching infrastructure, where unpaved corridors like Arritola Place Rd and Three Forks Rd connect a series of small, vital impoundments including Swisher Reservoir, Greeley Reservoir, and Noon Reservoir. The terrain is marked by distinct features such as Hole in Ground and the dramatic drop into Owyhee Canyon at the southwestern corner. This area’s reliance on seasonal moisture is evident in labels like Dry Lake and the various flats such as Rock Creek Flat and Antelope Flat. These names reflect the historical and contemporary ranching life that persists in this corner of the state, where the presence of water determines the utility of the land.
