1974 Map of Little Marsh

USGS Topo · Published 1993

About this map

Charlie Billie Camp and Pole Pen Camp occupy the cypress-flecked wetlands of the Florida interior during the early 1970s. This orthophotomap provides a clear aerial perspective of the complex hydrology of Mullet Slough and Deep Strand, where slightly elevated landforms like Baxter Island and Charlie Fewl Hammock break the otherwise continuous sweep of water and grass. The southern portion of the map is dominated by the linear path of the Everglades Parkway Toll Road, more famously known as Alligator Alley, which cuts a straight line through the natural landscape of Little Marsh. The map reveals the contrast between the organic patterns of the Everglades' wet prairies and the rigid infrastructure of the modern Pipeline and toll road system.
