Lolo National Forest encompasses the entirety of this mountainous landscape in Sanders County, defined by a complex drainage system feeding into the Little Thompson River. The terrain is marked by dramatic elevation changes, notably at Hell Roaring Canyon in the north and the high ridge of Loneman Divide to the south. A network of early forest and county routes, including Sears Gulch Rd and Old Co Rd, provides access through the timbered slopes. Smaller tributaries like Partridge Cr and Mudd Cr carve deep into the forest floor, illustrating the rugged hydrologic pattern typical of the western Montana wilderness. This 2014 survey documents the established forest road system and the enduring topographical boundaries that have shaped the region's land management for over a century.
