The Awuna River meanders across the southern portion of this Arctic landscape, defining the drainage patterns of the North Slope. Flowing within the boundaries of t2s r28w and t2s r27w, the river system is part of a complex hydrological network that includes the Kaksu River to the east and the headwaters of the Meade River in the northwest. This 2015 survey illustrates the untouched character of the borough's interior, where elevation contours reveal the subtle rises and depressions of the tundra rather than human infrastructure. The layout of the Public Land Survey System grids, such as t1s r28w, provides the only formal geometry over a territory defined entirely by its natural watercourses and the gradual slopes of the Alaskan ridge country.
