Lucas and Norwood anchor this part of southern Iowa, where the landscape is defined by the winding course of White Breast Creek and its various tributaries. The terrain transitions from the open uplands near Norwood to the more dissected valleys of Indian Cr and Swede Hollow. The settlement pattern follows a grid of township and range lines, but the topography of the creek bottoms dictates the path of many local routes like 185th Trl.
