The Standing Rock Indian Reservation Boundary defines much of this landscape along the border of North and South Dakota in the mid-1960s. The massive Oahe Reservoir dominates the eastern portion of the sheet, having transformed the original course of the Missouri River into a wide expanse of water. This inundation created deep inlets such as State Line Bay, where the two states meet amidst complex county lines involving Sioux, Corson, Emmons, and Campbell counties.

The western terrain consists of dissected uplands drained by several named watercourses, including Fireheart Creek, Bush Creek, and Blackfoot Creek. These drainages lead toward the reservoir, with Baldhead Creek and Hunkpapa Cr carving through the southern reaches. The map captures the geography of the area after the dam projects on the Missouri altered the local hydrology, creating the sprawling shoreline seen here.
