Lake Oahe dominates the western landscape of this Stanley County territory, its irregular shoreline reaching into the prairie through several distinct drainages. The namesake Mail Shack Cr and Sully Cr flow toward the reservoir from the east, carving the terrain alongside Bakers Gulch. The area's transition into a modern recreational and residential landscape is evidenced by the development of Pike Haven Pl and Remington Pl near the water's edge. This 2012 survey illustrates how the high plains of South Dakota are organized by a rigid section-line road system, including Onida Rd and various numbered avenues and streets, even as the natural topography of the Missouri River valley breaks that grid near the lake.
