Oneida Lake and the northern reaches of Big Bay anchor the southern edge of this landscape, where the waters of Big Bay Swamp and Toad Harbor Swamp drain toward the shoreline. The interior is defined by several distinct historic communities, including Dutch Settlement, Union Settlement, and the curiously named Mud Settlement. These hamlets are often marked by their original burial grounds, such as Little France Cem and Carleys Mills Cem, providing specific locations for genealogical research. The terrain rises north of West Monroe toward elevations like Whig Hill and The Pinnacle. Transportation patterns are evidenced by local aviation sites including Engineers Airport and Shepard Airport, while the hydrography is dominated by numerous creeks such as Slocum Cr and Scriba Creek that wind through the low-lying glacial topography of Oswego County.
