The arid high-desert landscape of Otero County is defined here by a network of seasonal watercourses and private ranch lands north of Alamogordo. Holloman Air Force Base occupies the southwestern corner of the sheet, while the rest of the terrain is a complex of alluvial features including Malone Draw, Ritas Draw, and Red Arroyo. The ranching history of the area is represented by McNatt Ranch, located centrally among the various drainages. Road networks such as Danley Ranch Rd and La Luz Gate Rd provide access through the open country, tracing the natural contours of the land between La Luz Creek and Hay Draw. This 2010 survey offers a detailed perspective on the transition from military installations to rural New Mexico grazing lands, showing the intersection of local infrastructure and the natural drainage patterns of the Tularosa Basin.
