Mammoth and North Mammoth anchor the eastern edge of this Pinal County landscape, situated along the course of the San Pedro River. The area is characterized by a network of drainage washes, including Pearl Wash, Tucson Wash, and Smelter Wash, which cut through the high ground of the Black Hills toward the river valley. Evidence of the region's mining and ranching legacy is visible in the names of the small settlements of Tiger and Fordville, as well as the path of Tiger Mine Rd winding through the hills. For local historians, the McKinney Cem and Mammoth Valley View Cem offer specific points of genealogical interest. To the west, the Arizona National Scenic Trail traverses the terrain near Signal Peak, while the southern reaches show modern infrastructure like the San Manuel Airport and Veterans Memorial Blvd.
