Albemarle Sound dominates the northern horizon of this coastal landscape, where the intricate transition between open water and the mainland is defined by a series of points and tidal inlets. The small settlement of Mashoes sits on a narrow peninsula near Caroon Point, connected to the interior only by Mashoes Rd and Cahoon Rd. This low-lying geography is characterized by numerous "guts" and narrow waterways such as Poster Gut, Gar Gut, and Liehue Gut that drain into the larger basins of East Lake and South Lake.
