About this map

The Tioughnioga River valley serves as the primary corridor for commerce and travel through this portion of central New York, carrying both the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad and the main highway route. The village of Marathon stands as the central hub of the region, situated where the valley floor widens. To the west, the landscape rises into the high ground of Lapeer and Virgil, where smaller agricultural settlements like Hunts Corners and East Virgil are connected by a network of rural roads such as Street Road and Jennings Creek Road. Genealogists will find several burial grounds documented, including Parker Street Cem and Snyder Hill Cem. Much of the northern terrain is preserved within the Hoxie Gorge State Forest and the James D Kennedy Memorial State Forest, highlighting the area's transition from cleared timberland back to protected woodland during the mid-20th century.
