About this map

The volcanic summit of Mauna Kea dominates this 1982 map, showing the high-altitude landscape of the Island of Hawaii. The peak is a site of scientific significance, marked by the Mauna Kea Observatories near Puu Wekiu and Puu Hauoki. Just below the summit area, the Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve protects a fragile alpine ecosystem including Lake Waiau, one of the highest lakes in the United States. Cultural history is present at Keanakakoi (Ancient Quarry), where basalt was once harvested for tools. The terrain transitions from these cinder cones, such as Puu Makanaka and Puu Poliahu, down into the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve. Infrastructure for research and recreation is shown via the Mauna Kea Access Road leading to the Mauna Kea State Park (Hale Pohaku Area).
