The Chitina River and Tana River converge in this remote reach of the Alaskan interior, marking a massive glacial drainage system within protected federal lands. The landscape is defined by the overlap of the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Preserve, the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park, and the designated Wrangell-St. Elias Wilderness. High-elevation features such as the Saint Elias Mountains and MacColl Ridge overlook the wide, braided riverbeds and the steep walls of Tana Canyon. To the southeast, Castle Bluffs stands as a prominent landmark above the river valley. This map illustrates the complex hydrography and topographical boundaries of one of the most protected wilderness areas in North America, showing the natural transition from high mountain ridges to expansive river basins.
