McCarthy Road provides the primary corridor through this high-altitude landscape, skirting the southern edge of the Wrangell-St Elias Wilderness. The terrain is dominated by the steep rises of the Wrangell Mountains and the Crystalline Hills, where numerous drainage systems like Crystal Creek and Fohlin Creek carve through the topography. In the southern portion of the map, the Lakina River meanders through more level ground near the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Preserve.
