About this map

The Chitina River dominates this landscape, its wide braided course carving through the heart of the Wrangell Saint Elias National Preserve. North of the river, the Crystalline Hills rise sharply, creating a massive barrier between the valley floor and the high Wrangell Saint Elias Wilderness. Human presence is concentrated along the narrow Mc Carthy Road, which parallels the Crystal River and provides access to scattered Cabins and a remote Landing Strip near Long Lake. This 1995 planimetric update, based on 1957 topography, illustrates the enduring isolation of this interior region, where travel is dictated by the confluence of the Lakina River and its various tributaries like Steamboat Creek. The map serves as a detailed record of the transition between protected parklands and the strictly managed wilderness boundaries.
