The John Day River carves a deep path through the high plateau of the eastern Oregon interior, forming the natural border between Sherman and Gilliam counties. At the heart of this landscape lies the small settlement of McDonald, situated near the riverbanks where historic routes converged. Much of this stretch is protected as the John Day Wild and Scenic River, preserving a canyon landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes and dry washes.
