McDowell Mountain defines the topography of this desert landscape, anchored by the high points of McDowell Peak and Thompson Peak. By the early 2000s, the foothills and desert floor show a transition from protected lands to expanding suburban infrastructure. Residential developments and several Golf Courses press against the boundaries of Tonto National Forest and the McDowell Mountain Regional Park.
