The Umatilla National Forest and Whitman National Forest converge in this high-country drainage, where the boundary between Umatilla and Union Counties cuts across the northern ridges. The landscape is defined by the headwaters and tributaries of the Grande Ronde River, which appears in the southeastern corner. Significant drainage systems including McIntyre Creek, McCoy Creek, and Meadow Creek carve deep valleys through the timberland.
