McMahon Ridge and the volcanic prominence of Black Butte anchor this high-desert landscape along the border of Esmeralda and Nye counties. The terrain is characterized by the arid expanse of the Ralston Desert and the drainage patterns of Big Wash, which cuts across the central basin. At the southern edge of the survey, Kendall Mtn rises above the surrounding flats, providing a distinct landmark for this part of the Great Basin.
