1978 Map of Mesa Leon

About this map

Mesa Leon rises as a prominent high-ground feature above the eastern New Mexico landscape in this late 1970s survey. The terrain is defined by the ephemeral drainage of San Pablo Draw and the isolated livestock infrastructure essential to ranching in Guadalupe County. Along the eastern edge of the quadrangle, the Southern Pacific railroad corridor cuts a straight line through the plains, passing through the small settlement or siding of Leoncito. This map illustrates the transition of the high desert plateau, where water sources like the Burton Windmill, Fogon Windmill, and a lone Tank represent the thin margin of human utility in a dry environment. The sparse distribution of these features reveals a landscape still largely dedicated to large-scale grazing and the long-distance transport of the rail lines.
