Metaline Falls and the town of Metaline anchor the northern reaches of the Pend Oreille River as it carves through the Colville National Forest. This section of northeast Washington is defined by the river’s engineering and natural mountain terrain, where the Box Canyon Reservoir and Box Canyon itself reveal the industrial and hydroelectric history of the valley. Significant family-history markers are preserved here, notably the Perkins Family Cem located near the riverbank north of Wolf Creek.

Away from the water, the landscape rises sharply into high peaks such as Linton Mtn and Deer Mtn. High-altitude meadows like Thorson Meadow and Cameron Meadow break the dense timber of the national forest, while smaller water bodies including Lost Lake and Flume Creek Reservoir suggest the complex drainage systems that feed into the Pend Oreille. The network of forest roads, including Box Canyon Road and Cedar Creek Road, provides a look at the access routes used for timber and recreation in this corner of Pend Oreille County.
