About this map

Large agricultural operations dominate the arid interior of San Luis Obispo County in the mid-1940s, as shown by the prominent Kern County Land Co Ranch and the Klipstein Ranch. The topography is defined by the sharp transition from the Carrizo Plain and the Elkhorn Plain into the rising elevations of the Caliente Range. A notable geologic Scarp runs through the eastern portion of the sheet, illustrating the seismic character of this landscape. Beyond the ranch headquarters and the Kern County Land Co Corrals, the area remains sparsely developed, with land use primarily focused on grazing and early resource exploration as indicated by the presence of Wells in the southern foothills.
