1980 Map of Miles

USGS Topo · Published 1981

About this map

Miles serves as a central hub in this survey of eastern Iowa, situated near the boundary of Jackson and Clinton counties. The landscape is defined by the branching waterways of Copper Creek and the Elk River, which cut through the undulating terrain of Deep Creek and Elk River townships. To the north, the Maquoketa River flows past the tracks of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific Railroad, while several sections of Old Railroad Grade trace discontinued routes through the countryside. Small rural settlements like Sterling and Van Buren are documented alongside numerous family and community burial grounds, including Vernon Prairie Cem and Fairview Cem. The presence of several quarries and a Sewage Disposal Pond near the town center indicates the local industrial and municipal development of the late 20th century.
