About this map

The Little Bitterroot River winds through this section of Sanders County in the mid-1960s, defining a landscape where mountain drainage meets valley irrigation. The western slopes are dominated by the Lolo Nat For, where steep terrain is carved by Mill Pocket Creek and Basso Creek. Evidence of early 20th-century water management is visible in the network of the Camas Canal and Alder Creek Ditch, which redirect flow toward the valley floor. To the east, the terrain levels out at Lozeau Flats and the base of Sullivan Hill. Near the center of the valley, the McKay Cem serves as a small but significant genealogical marker among the scattered wells and unimproved roads. The southern portion of the sheet is anchored by the Upper Dry Fork Reservoir, illustrating the vital role of water storage in this Montana landscape.
