About this map

Miners Peak rises above a landscape defined by dramatic geological formations within the southeastern corner of Colorado. This modern topographic survey of Las Animas County illustrates the convergence of deep drainages and high plateaus, most notably where the massive Mesa de Maya dominates the southern half of the quadrangle. The land is characterized by a network of winding watercourses and their carved depressions, including Chacuaco Canyon, Aguaje Canyon, and Tobe Canyon. Much of the area is protected as part of the Comanche National Grassland, reflecting a regional transition toward federal land management and conservation. Traces of human passage are sparse, limited primarily to rural routes like Co RD 157.9 and Co RD 165.1, which navigate the high plains around Chacuaco Cr and Tobe Cr.
