About this map

The confluence area of the Bighorn River and the Yellowstone River defines this landscape in southern Montana, where the borders of Yellowstone, Treasure, and Big Horn counties meet. This intersection of river valleys created fertile lowlands such as Big Ox Bottom and Mission Bottom, where the early 21st-century agricultural footprint is maintained by irrigation features like the Victory Ditch. The surrounding terrain is heavily dissected by numerous coulees, including Fighting Spring Coulee, Cubbison Coulee, and Greene Coulee, which drain the higher benches toward the river basins.
