Superior National Forest defines the character of this northern landscape, dominated by a complex network of glacial lakes and river systems. The Little Isabella River meanders across the terrain, serving as a primary drainage for numerous smaller bodies of water like Steamhaul Lake, Hogstrom Lake, and Mitawan Lake. The presence of the Omir Grade and the extensive Tomahawk road system points to a history of timber management and forest access in this part of Lake County. This 2019 survey documents a modern wilderness area where infrastructure is primarily limited to forest service routes, such as the Gegoka Flathorn Connector F and Steamhaul Lake Road, which provide access to the dense jackpine and sphagnum environments characteristic of the Boundary Waters region.
