Lewis & Clark National Forest anchors the southern portion of this landscape, where the terrain climbs toward the high elevations of Lookout Ridge and the Mowitch Basin. The northern half is defined by a complex drainage system of coulees and creeks, including Hay Coulee, Bite Coulee, and the meandering path of Badger Creek. This 2014 survey shows a sparsely populated region of Glacier County and Pondera County where primitive travel routes like Wells Trl and Hay Coulee Trl navigate the high plains. Significant water bodies such as Mitten Lake, Horn Lake, and the Twin Lakes are central features in an area dominated by cattle grazing and federal land management. The road network, including Heart Butte Rd and Spotted Eagle Rd, provides the primary access through this remote section of the Montana foothills.
