Mogollon sits at the heart of an intensive mineral exploration district, surrounded by a dense network of historic lode claims and tunnels. The settlement patterns follow the steep drainages of Mineral Creek and Silver Creek, where operations like the Enterprise Mine, Czar Mine, and Cooney Mine established the local economy. Evidence of the early community is preserved at the Mogollon Cemetery and the Cooney Cemetery near the site of Cooney.

Beyond the mining camps, the landscape transitions into high country marked by Stout Mesa and Silver Peak. Local water management is visible through numerous tanks and springs, such as East Stout Mesa Tank and Bearup Spring. To the north, the terrain becomes increasingly complex around Devils Creek and Buck Mountain, while isolated outposts like Grove Ranch and Oaks Ranch appear in the western canyons, indicating the reach of ranching alongside the dominant mining industry.
