Monache Mtn and Smith Mtn dominate the high-elevation landscape of this Tulare County backcountry within the Inyo National Forest and Sequoia National Forest. The 2015 topography reveals a complex network of seasonal meadows and riparian corridors, including the sprawling Monache Meadow and the serpentine course of the S Fork Kern River. The area is characterized by its vital water sources such as Soda Springs and Olivas Spring, which historically supported the seasonal grazing practices indicated by the numerous named meadows like McConnell Meadow and Bakeoven Meadow.
