The Bear Lake Valley serves as a wide agricultural and hydrological basin in this modern survey of Southeast Idaho. The city of Montpelier remains the primary hub, situated where Montpelier Creek exits the steep terrain of the Preuss Range. To the north and south, smaller settlements like Bennington and Wardboro anchor the valley floor along the Bear River, which is flanked by an extensive network of wetlands and irrigation works, including the Montpelier Preston Canal and Kent-La Rocco Canal.
