Jefferson National Forest dominates this section of the Blue Ridge, where the borders of Botetourt and Bedford counties meet along the high ridges. The landscape is defined by the high-elevation passage of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which traverses peaks such as Cove Mtn and Harveys Knob. Below these heights, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through gaps like Bearwallow Gap and Bobblets Gap, providing a corridor through the steep terrain.

Settlement is concentrated in the lower elevations, particularly around Montvale in the southwest and the small community of Reba in the southeast. Numerous drainages, including N Fork Goose Cr and Day Cr, carve deep hollows such as Chair Rock Hollow and Tar Hollow. These features illustrate the traditional transition from high-forest wilderness to the valley-bottom agriculture and residency that has historically characterized this part of the Virginia mountains.
