The Vigilante Experimental Range occupies the northern reaches of this high-elevation landscape, where the headwaters of the Ruby River and the West Fork Madison River originate. As a mid-century study of the Beaverhead National Forest, the map documents a terrain defined by seasonal livestock grazing and forestry management rather than permanent towns. Sparse outposts such as Cottonwood Camp, Three Forks Cow Camp, and Williams Camp are scattered along the drainages of the Gravelly Range and the Beaverhead Mountains.
