About this map

The remote forest lands of the Aroostook Co Piscataquis Co border are defined by a network of logging camps and sporting destinations as they stood in the early 1930s. This survey records the interior wilderness where the Great Northern Dam managed water flow near McNally Ponds. The landscape is dominated by the sprawling headwaters of the Mooseleuk Stream and the Big Machias Lake system. Numerous isolated outposts like Storms Camp, Goulds Camp, and Twentyfivemile Camp are scattered throughout the townships, providing a record of the early 20th-century timber and recreational economy. Higher elevations such as Peaked Mountain and Bartlett Mountain provide landmarks for the complex drainage basins of Twentymile Brook and Farrar Brook. A lone Fire Tower on Round Mountain stands as a sentinel over this unpopulated region, highlighting the importance of fire suppression in the managed Maine woods.
