The Missouri River cuts a wide path through the northwestern corner of this landscape, marking the boundary between Roosevelt and Richland counties. The terrain is defined by a series of deep drainage features that carve into the high plains, most notably Mortarstone Bluff and a network of coulees named for early land use and local landmarks. From Schoolhouse Coulee in the west to Coalmine Coulee in the east, these ravines channel water toward the river or into smaller tributaries like Soo Prong and W Charlie Creek.
