Tahawus and the historic Upper Works region serve as the central landmarks of this High Peaks landscape, where the headwaters of the Hudson River begin their southward journey. This area of the Adirondack Park Preserve is defined by a dense network of water bodies and high elevations, including Henderson Lake, Lake Andrew, and the secluded Calamity Pond. The topography is dominated by the MacIntyre Mountains and peaks such as Mt Adams and Henderson Mtn, illustrating the difficult terrain that challenged early industrial efforts in the Adirondacks.
