Goddard Divide and the Sierra Nevada crest dominate this high-altitude landscape within the Kings Canyon National Park and Sierra National Forest. The geography is defined by a dense concentration of glacial cirques and alpine basins, including the Ionian Basin and Blackcap Basin. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the eastern half of the sheet, crossing through Le Conte Canyon and over the notable Muir Pass near Helen Lake. This area serves as a critical hydrologic divide, feeding the Middle Fork Kings River to the east and the South Fork San Joaquin River to the west. Landforms such as Mount Goddard, Black Giant, and the steep Enchanted Gorge illustrate the extreme verticality of the region, where numerous named tarns like Wanda Lake and Martha Lake occupy the high granite benches.
