Mount Harvard and the surrounding Collegiate Peaks dominate this high-altitude landscape along the Continental Divide during the mid-1990s. The settlement of Winfield sits in the northern reaches near the Winfield Cemetery, serving as a focal point for the historic mining activity that once defined these gulches. Evidence of this industrial past remains through the Magdalene Mine and various unnamed mines and prospects scattered across the steep slopes.

As part of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, the terrain is defined by extreme elevations, including Mount Belford and Mount Columbia. The Colorado Trail traverses the eastern slopes, passing near drainage systems like Frenchman Creek and Columbia Creek. The complex hydrology of the Sawatch Range is visible in the numerous basins, from the Missouri Basin to the Horn Fork Basin, and alpine water bodies such as Rainbow Lake and Silver King Lake.
