Mt Jefferson and the surrounding high-altitude terrain of the Toquima Range dominate this corner of the Toiyabe National Forest in Nye County. The landscape is defined by its extreme verticality, rising from the Big Smoky Valley to a series of prominent peaks including North Summit Mt Jefferson, Mid Summit Mt Jefferson, and South Summit. This geography creates a radial drainage pattern of steep canyons and seasonal creeks, most notably Bucks Canyon and Slaughterhouse Canyon.
