Medicine Bow Forest Reserve encompasses much of this northwestern Colorado landscape at the turn of the century, where the Thompson River and its North Fork carve through the Front Range. Early ranching and tourism define the settlement pattern, anchored by the Rustic Hotel and Loveland Heights. Large holdings like the Dunraven Ranch and Bryants Ranch are established along the watercourses, while the eastern edge near Noland shows the influence of the B and R R line. The terrain transitions from the high peaks of Mt. Olympus and Storm Mtn down into named valleys such as Estes Park and Cedar Park. This survey captures the region just as it was becoming a primary destination for mountain travelers, prior to the modernization of its road network.
