Carbondale sits at the northern edge of this high-altitude landscape, where the Crystal River valley begins its deep cut through the mountains. Dominating the southern half of the sheet is the massive profile of Mt Sopris, its twin peaks rising within the White River National Forest. The complex water management of the region is evident in the many engineering features like the Sweet Jessup Canal and Ella Ditch, which redirect snowmelt from the high basins down toward the valley floor.
