Mountain Lake and the high elevations of the Huron Mountains dominate this remote northern Michigan terrain. The landscape is defined by its complex hydrology, where the Cliff River and Little Huron River carve through high ground marked by prominent summits like Mt Benison and Mt Ida. A significant boundary between Baraga Co and Marquette Co bisects the region, separating these wild tracts of timber and water. Evidence of the area's vertical relief is found at Forty Foot Falls and Turkey Neck Falls, while the names Lumberman Bay and Northwestern Rd suggest the historical importance of the logging industry to this corner of the Upper Peninsula. Along the southern edge, localized water features such as Anderson Pond and Bentley Ponds collect drainage before it joins the Salmon Trout River system.
