About this map

Mountain View and the surrounding Ozark terrain are documented here just before the close of the nineteenth century, illustrating a landscape defined by isolated settlements and a complex web of river crossings. The drainage of the White River and its numerous tributaries, including Sylamore Creek and Big Creek, dictate the movement across the northern portion of the sheet. To the south, the Little Red River system serves as the primary corridor for commerce and travel. The reliance on river-based transit is evident through specifically marked points of passage such as Upper Fy., Lower Fy., and Wilsons Fd.. Local centers like Clinton and Eglantine are established as the primary hubs in an area otherwise characterized by named heights like Sugar Loaf Mt. and Candlestick Knob. This survey provides a record of pre-automotive Arkansas where river coves like Goffs Cove and named points such as Stevens Point were essential navigational landmarks.
