Olympic National Forest and the recently established Olympic National Park define this 1930s high-elevation landscape. The topography, surveyed by G.S. Druhot and L.B. Lint, reveals a network of back-country infrastructure essential for forest management and early recreation. Numerous remote outposts like the Slab Creek Guard Sta and Elkhorn Guard Sta are connected by trails through the river valleys of the Dungeness River and Dosewallips River.

Industrial history is present even in these heights, noted by the Tubal Cain Mine near the Clallam and Jefferson county line and the Barry Mine further south. Along the eastern edge, the settlement of Eldon sits on the shore of the Hood Canal where Highway 101 follows the coastline. This survey preserves the placement of wilderness shelters such as Dose Forks Shelter and Camp Colonel Shelter before mid-century changes altered the park's administrative footprint.
