1971 Map of Mt Rainier West

USGS Topo · Published 1974

About this map

The western slopes of Mt Rainier are defined here by a massive radiating network of ice and water, dominated by the Puyallup Glacier, Tahoma Glacier, and the Nisqually Glacier. These glacial flows feed a complex hydrology of silt-heavy rivers including the Nisqually River and Puyallup River, which have carved deep valleys through the volcanic landscape. At the southern base of the mountain, Longmire serves as a primary hub for mountain activity, situated near the Nisqually Mines and the Cougar Rock Campground.
